Stop Genocide

Urgent Action: Darfur From Day One

Published January 22, 2009 @ 07:26PM PT

So we're finally in the Age of Obama --- the man is finally in the White House, and all seems right with the world again.

Except...not. The genocide in Darfur...definitely still raging. Don't let your happiness with the new face in DC turn to complacency --- or, if you aren't particularly happy about it, don't let your disgruntlement disable you. Take a few minutes from your day to make sure that Darfur a "day one" priority.

STAND, the Genocide Intervention Network, Save Darfur, and ENOUGH are partnering for the "Darfur From Day One" campaign, and put together a fantastic web resource to enable activists to demand the change the world needs from our new leaders.

The website not only includes every bit of information an activist's heart could desire, including a list of campaign promises and an overview of the Senate confirmation process, but features daily action alerts (with their own RSS feed, which, as a Google Reader Addict, I think is quite nifty), information on setting up a lobby appointment, and the opportunity to join a STAND Regional Response Team.

The coalition has three main asks of the President:

1. Appoint a high level envoy, with appropriate staff and resources.

    2. Lead a coordinated effort among the international community to pressure Khartoum and enforce existing bans on offensive military flights and arms trading.

      3. Establish mechanisms for the prevention of future genocides.

        "Wilson. Roosevelt. Carter. Clinton. Bush.

Armenia. The Holocaust. Cambodia. Rwanda. Bosnia. Darfur.

Let's ensure that President Obama does not have a similar tragedy attached to his legacy."
