Sunday Links: Rallies at the White House, and Fallacies of Unity Gov'ts

Published July 26, 2009 @ 09:49AM PT

Darfuri activists and their supporters rallied in front of the White House on Wednesday, before marching to the State Department with a list of demands to deliver to Secretary Clinton. Mohamed Yahya, the founder and director of the Damanga Coalition for Freedom and Democracy and organizer of the rally, commented:

"Today's ruling on Abyei demonstrates the importance of justice and peace coming together for Sudan. Just as the court's ruling on Abyei is being respected, so should the court's decision regarding the indictments against al-Bashir."

The International Crisis Group released a new report recently on Sudan and the ICC, which gives an interesting look at the internal impact of the arrest warrant for Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, and argues that "Sudan must dismantle its system of impunity for atrocity crimes or there will be no peace in Darfur."

For all you international law dorks out there, Opinio Juris has an interesting discussion on the ins and outs of universals jurisdiction and a new law on the prosecuting suspected genocidaires in the UK.

Finally, I couldn't agree more with my friends over at Wronging Rights, who note that the lesson learned from incorporating election-stealers into "unity governments" is:

"Kids, don't feel sad if you can't get into power through legitimate means. Just threaten to destabilize your country, and the international community will give you some for free!"
