Is Oil Ever NOT Connected to War?

Published July 07, 2009 @ 05:17PM PT

Sudan formally joined the African Petroleum Producers Association (APPA) yesterday with a signing ceremony in Abuja.

According to Nigeria's Minister of Petroleum Resources, Dr Rilwanu Lukman, since its founding in 1986, "the association has created the much-needed platform for exchange of experiences and ideas amongst APPA countries."

Given the membership list, I can't help but wonder: Does said "exchange of experience and ideas" include ways to use oil for revenue/political cover whilst conducting disastrous wars (civil, and otherwise) and/or trampling the most basic human rights of one's own citizens?

And to Energy Gluttons elsewhere in the world: How often do you stop to think about the human cost of your weekly fill-up? Ever?

Perhaps we should start a poster campaign at gas stations.

I seem to be running with a certain theme in my postings lately which hasn't quite released me yet and applies just as easily in this post.

As a macro/micro analogy, it appears that the world is going into rehab.  Who wants to be the first to stand up and say "Hi, I'm (a country), and I'm addicted to oil"?
