Featured Ideas: End Genocide in Darfur, and forever
Published December 04, 2008 @ 11:44AM PT

The leading ideas in the "Ideas for Change in America" genocide section are:
President-Elect Obama must create a peace surge for Sudan, focused on ending the crisis in Darfur rather than managing it. Supporting a U.N.-authorized peacekeeping force that actively protects civilians and holding the perpetrators of the genocide to account are important elements of this "peace surge." Making Darfur a priority from Day One will help ensure immediate and lasting benefits for the people of Sudan.
- Jerry Fowler (President, Save Darfur Coalition)
Use the full force of American diplomatic clout to end genocide and mass atrocity
The Obama Administration should engage the international community in a
coordinated effort to pressure--through a variety of mechanisms, including the use of force when called for---regimes that kill and otherwise abuse their own citizens. Such an approach should be inclusive of the concerns and perspectives of different nations, but should not favor a soft line against war criminals---crimes against humanity call for more sticks, less carrots. The Administration should also support the ICC and other mechanisms for international justice as a way to marginalize abusive leaders, and should provide support to UN-led peacekeeping missions around the world.

Then, take 2 easy actions to make it clear to the new administration that ending genocide is a top priority. Visit www.addyourvoice.org to sign a postcard to President-Elect Obama, and then send a message to Secretary of State nominee Hillary Clinton.

I think Obama will be the one dedicated to a peaceful African Continent. I shed tears as I see how cruel the environment is for children without parents and the older child having to take care of his younger brothers or sisters. We need to send help and care to the many destitute people. Our presidents have been engaged in war for a whole century--giving ammunition for our military and selling war materials to other countries as they fight our own people. Our Presidents & their cohorts only think of money for themselves. It will come out soon. Love, Sylvia
